Weather Guidelines

We take the safety of visitors, volunteers and vendors in the Powhatan Farmers Market at Westchester Commons seriously, trying to control as much as we can to avoid harmful incidents. However, weather can change rapidly from a sunny day to a downpour, sometimes with wind and lightning. If it is raining, bring your umbrella and stroll between the raindrops, the Market will be open!  However, if there is a threat of severe weather - thunder, lightning, very high winds, or basic hurricane conditions - our first priority is to make sure that everyone is safe.  If you are planning a visit and severe weather is in the forecast, please make sure to check our Facebook page frequently.  We will post any weather announcements there.  If you are shopping in the Market when weather is an issue, please follow these guidelines:

  • For the threat of lightning, people in the Market will be directed to their vehicles until 30 minutes have passed lightning/thunder free.
  • If more than 60 minutes have passed and the storm continues, or the Market Manager/Committee can verify an extended storm cell’s presence past the remaining open hours of the Market, the Market will close for the rest of the day.

In the event these safety steps are used, your attention to the guidelines will help get everything in order quickly. Once the weather passes, we can pick up where we left off.

About Us

Powhatan Farmers Market at Westchester Commons is a community of small-business entrepreneurs - farmers, growers and artisans - who believe in being good stewards of the environment, raising food sustainably and creating imaginative works of art. At the Market, patrons talk directly with producers, learning where/how their food was grown, and perhaps even a new way to prepare it. After all, cooking fresh, unprocessed food and sharing it with people you love is one of life's great pleasures.

First Thursday of every month, young entrepreneurs sell produce they have grown and/or crafts they have made. Come support these budding businesspeople at the Kids' Market, sponsored by the Powhatan and Chesterfield offices of Virginia Cooperative Extension.
